How music can affect your health

Music Is Life!

When was the last time you heard that song? You know THAT SONG. The one that got you hype, the one that made you feel good, the one that gave you new energy. Music is life! Music is emotion translated into rhyme and sounds. Music is a powerful way to express Intent. In short, music can change our moods, and mindset which all impact our health and well-being. In this article we are going to look at music, how it affects your health and what you can do to use it to your advantage.

How Music Affects Your Health

To really understand how music affects you lets go over an example. I have included a YouTube video with a song. We are going to see how the song impact you. Let’s start, no need to listen to the who song, just the first minute should do.

Now, if you were unfamiliar with the song, it called Happy by Pharrell. If you like the song or not won’t matter for this experiment. I would like you to image how difficult it would be to listen to this song and be depressed or sad. I bet you would either turn off the song because it doesn’t match how you feel, or you would change how you feel. This is a perfect example of how music can impact us. From the words to tempo music connects to us on an emotionally level.

Music has such an impact, that in the past and even today there has been groups of individuals who want to censer music. Take for example Rap music between the 70s - 90s, or even some of the business from artists such as Bob Marley. It has been well documented that some interest groups looked to remove the music from the mainstream. This is because of the influence that the words can have on the people who listen to the music. This influence extends to our Mindset

Let’s look at what the experts say about Music and its Impacts

A few studies documented from Harvard Heath (Music and Health) noted how impactful Music is. For example, there is the popular "Mozart effect." study where researchers at the University of California, Irvine, investigated how listening to music affects cognitive function. What they found was "in their first study, they administered standard IQ test questions to three groups of college students, comparing those who had spent 10 minutes listening to a Mozart piano sonata with a group that had been listening to a relaxation tape and one that had been waiting in silence. Mozart was the winner, consistently boosting test scores."

In another study on music and stress from New York examined how music affects surgical patients. "Half were randomly assigned to receive ordinary care; the others got the same care but also listened to music of their choice through headphones before, during, and immediately after the operations. Before surgery, the patients in both groups had similar blood pressures. But the patients surrounded by silence remained hypertensive throughout the operation, while the pressures of those who listened to music came down rapidly and stayed down into the recovery room. The listeners also reported that they felt calmer and better during the operation."

How can I use music to improve my mindset?

Listen to up-tempo music

It doesn't matter the Genre, listening to up-tempo music can raise your energy level. If you have ever gone to the Gym you will notice that they tend to play high tempo music. This is because your heart tends to try to sync to the beat of the music. You may even notice that you start moving to the music just to burn off the extra energy.

Stop Listening to Negative Songs

Because music can be so influential, we all need to be very careful with the songs that we choose to listen to. Even if the song sounds amazing, we need to be very careful. Our brain in a way works on autopilot and the words in the song can make it directly to our subconscious mind. Just ask yourself before you listen to a song, is this song in-line with my mindset.

Create Triggers for your favorite Songs

One of the techniques that I personally love to use is using music as a trigger. How this works is very simple. First you select your favorite song, then you pick something that you want to have, or something that brings you a state of joy. While you are in that state you replay the song over and over again. What this will do is allow your mind to associate the song with that feeling. So, what happens is when you re-listening to the song, it will shift your mindset from where it is to what it was when you created the trigger.

Now there is a trick to this, it also works in the reverse. If you were listening to a song that you associate with something negative, your mind will automatically create a trigger. So, when you re-listen to the song, you will start to feel the way you were feeling when the song was first played. In this case, no matter how much you love the song, if you want to change your mindset you need to be like Frozen and "Let it go".
